The man, known only as Yap, ignored his wife's demand to get an early night so that he could take his children to school the next day, and sneaked out of bed to watch England play France.
His cry of agony as Zinedine Zidane scored the winning penalty deep into injury time for a 2-1 French win woke up his wife, and she subsequently implemented her harsh punishment, Reuters reports.
Yap has now been forced to complain to the main ethnic Chinese political party in Malaysia, after his disgruntled spouse confiscated his remote control and satellite TV card.
"She refused to allow me to watch the game although I promised not to oversleep or shun my responsibility of sending the children to school," 47-year-old Yap told the English-language Star newspaper.
"My wife just doesn't understand my passion for football."
There is no indication that Yap will press a charge of assault on his wife - despite her hitting him on the head with the remote after she discovered his disobedience.
